History of the James Moore, Jr. Chapter
Daughters of the American Colonists
Montgomery, Alabama
The Governor James Moore, Jr. Chapter, Daughters of the American Colonists, was organized January 11, 1966 in Montgomery, Alabama. The founder was Mrs. Roy Stuart Garrett (Vivian Stanley) of Dublin, Georgia, who died before the final papers were received. On July 14, 1965, Mrs. James M. Sizemore, State Regent, assisted by Mrs. John Gannon, called together the prospective members to formulate plans for organizing a new chapter. Mrs. Fred G. Koenig, Sr., National Vice President General, presided, explaining the purpose of the meeting was to replace Mrs. Roy S. Garrett, the former Organizing Regent. The State Regent recommended Mrs. Edwin Rodgers (Charlotte Cook), who was elected. Her appointment was to be approved at the October Board Meeting in Washington, DC. After she was approved, Mrs. Edwin Rodgers called a meeting to elect officers. At this meeting the following officers were elected:
Our first Regent was Mrs. Mathew H. Stuart (Julia Whitaker)
First Vice Regent, Miss Frances Beach Hudson
Second Vice Regent, Mrs. Edwin H. Auerbach (Elva Johnson)
Chaplain, Mrs. Albert A. Ashley (Mary England McConnell)
Recording Secretary, Mrs. Frank M. Smith (Lillian Vandiver)
Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Willbain A. Harrvey (Claire Phillips)
Registrar, Mrs. Edwin N. Rodgers (Charlotte Cook)
Treasurer, Mrs. William A. Gunter (Annie Laurie)
Historian, Mrs. James Wallace Browder (Sarah Roche)
Librarian, Mrs. Mack S. Purvis (Sarah Read)
As Organizing Regent, it was the privilege of Mrs. Roy Garrett to choose the chapter’s name. She chose the name Governor James Moore, Jr., who was the son of James Moore, Sr.
Moore Sr. was born in Ireland about 1650. He immigrated to the colonies and brought with him from Ireland 37 servants. James, Sr., was a Captain, Esquire, Gentleman, Lord Proprietor’s Deputy, and Secretary of Province. He was in South Carolina at the time that James Moore, Jr., was born in 1676. James, Sr., died of distemper before March 1706.
Governor James Moore, Jr., served as Royal or Colonial Governor from 1719-1721. He was Lt. Governor of the Carolinas, Speaker of the General Assembly, Receiver General, Chief Justice and Lt. Colonel of the Indian War in 1710. His wife was Elizabeth Baresford who was born about 1675. James, Jr., died in Charleston, SC on February 17, 1723.
A main focus of the Governor James Moore, Jr. Chapter is to help preserve colonial period buildings. Our Chapter assisted in the preservation of the Old North Hull District, such as the 1897 train shed. For example, we are proud to say that Montgomery led the country in creating areas where important old buildings were saved.
Regent Mrs. John Webb (Cecile Doyle Morgan) loved hosting the 55th State Assembly in 1994 with Mrs. J. Thomas Moore (Christine Gilmer), Regent of the Frances Billingsley, I Chapter. Our guests enjoyed tours of the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Theater and the Museum of Fine Arts. We also viewed an exhibit of miniature buildings of the Colonial Period made by sixth grade students. The Chapter was also delighted when Selma’s Francis Billingsley, I Chapter merged with our chapter in June 2004.
At the 60th State Assembly hosted by Horseshoe Bend Chapter, our own Mrs. Kenneth W. Underwood, Jr. (Rena Pope) Honorary State Regent and past National Vice President of the Southern Section, was the honored guest. Mrs. Underwood has been very active with the Children of the American Colonist (CAC) as were many of her grandchildren. She also co-chaired the National CAC assembly in the summer of 2008.
In 2008, the founders of the Governor James Moore, Jr., Chapter Mrs. Roy Stuart Garrett and Mrs. Edwin Rodgers were memorialized with a dedication of markers on their graves at Greenwood cemetery with family members and many DAC members present. Two of our founding members are still living as of January 2009, Mary England Ashley lives in Montgomery, AL and Sarah Roche Browder lives in Texas.
